Why Grow Flowers?

Why grow flowers? There is probably a really scientific, intelligent answer to this question. But seeing as I dropped intro to bio freshman year, and took a poetry class instead, I’ll be going in another direction.
That’s not to say I don’t appreciate that flowers play an integral role in the natural world and our environment. Save the fucking bees am I right?
But I’ll admit that my answer is much more selfish than that. Flowers make me smile. Making the perfect arrangement makes me feel immense satisfaction. And watching them live through their lifecycle, eventually setting to seed makes me feel an extreme wistfulness that could be described as both melancholy and hope all wrapped up together.
Seeing something end, but with a promise of a new future, is so beautiful. And from just one flower can come anywhere from 20 to 100 seeds. Imagine that. Pure possibility.
I don’t know why some others may grow flowers, but I grow them to find joy. Sure, it can come with some loss. Certainly some stress (I’m talking to you, Japanese beetles, my number one opp.) But it’s more than worth it at the end of the day.
With all my love and passion,
Hannah (& Watson) 💜🐾
